The Scavenger Hunt was a fun assignment. I enjoyed how it got us out of the classroom. My group did the "ABC" scavenger hunt. Our objective was to collect objects that represented letters A to L. It was actually a lot harder and more objective than I initially thought. At first I thought it would be easy and very clear which objects we would use. Yet, then we got outside and then it wasn't as clear. Did it count to use signs that had words that started with the letter? At first we were going to use A for accessible and take a picture of the handicap sign but then we were also using it for the E off the Emergency sign. Then we had to make decisions on which pictures we would allow to be used from the words or from the object itself like a car for c or leaves for l. I think this would be a great tool to use in my 1st grade classroom. It would allow them to get experience with different media. Having to take the pictures with a different technological device and having it to transfer it to different revenues. I think it is also more of an authentic assessment. The scavenger has an outline for students to follow but then opens up opportunities for them to think more outside the box. It creates creative thinking as well as a little of some critical thinking!
Side note about the online picture assignment. It ended up being harder than I had first imagined. It showed me how spoiled and naive I had been about taking pictures from google images. I hadn't thought about the copy rights and this assignment made me focus on that aspect more than before. It became frustrating though not being able to take any picture I found from Flickr like I was use to with google images. Instead all the cute perfect pictures I found for my project ended up having copy right protection and were unable to download. I quickly missed my google images that somehow always gave me exactly what I was looking for. I think this would be a great tool to work in the idea of thinking about copy right. I feel like this could also open more authentic dialogue up amongst the students. It could stem to taking things from classmates and what makes something "our property". It would bring good self awareness of those around us. It could also lead to a great discussion about different jobs like photography, painting, and musicians and how they protect their work.
Have a blessed day,
Abby
